Spring symbolizes new beginnings. From beautiful blooming buds to shedding our winter layers, it’s a time to refresh your wardrobe, your space, and more. Another place that’s due for a revamp come March 21st? Your skincare routine, of course. Just as lighter layers are key as the weather warms up, the same rule applies to your skincare routine. Rather than incorporating thick, heavy moisturizers and oils as we did during the cooler temps, you’ll want to opt for products that veer on the lighter, thinner side in texture but are still packed with potent ingredients to give you a refreshed, radiant glow. Here, we’ve gathered our top five spring skincare tips to help you achieve a healthy, fresh-faced glow for the new season ahead.

Shed Dull Winter-Plagued Skin

Dry, dull, and  flaky skin is inevitable in the frigid winter months. But thankfully now that spring has sprung you can say goodbye to the dryness until next year. Incorporating exfoliating treatments into your routine is the best way to revive and reset your complexion. Not only that but a fresh, exfoliated complexion makes the best base for your other skincare products as the serums, creams, and treatments are able to better penetrate the skin for a higher absorption rate. We prefer chemical exfoliating treatments as they’re more gentle, yet highly effective for removing that dirt, grit, and grime sitting in your pores. Our two favorites are radiance-boosting Glow On Enzyme Mask ($45) which is made from  a combination of natural fruit enzymes including AHAs more specifically  lactic, malic, and phytic acids, along with a hit of replenishing oils to clear out clogged pores, boost your glow, and rehydrate skin in one fell swoop. Looking for something with less clean up? Our Texture Magic Exfoliating Toner ($48) that’s designed for daily use fits the bill. It’s chock full of a sensitive-skin-friendly blend of lactic, phytic, citric, malic, and salicylic acid plus niacinamide to exfoliate, soothe and hydrate the skin.

Switch To Lighter Layers Of Hydration

Warm weather and thick formulas can lead to three things: clogged pores, excess oil and shine, and melty makeup. Skip the thick, heavy moisturizers and reach for lighter gels and creams. But that’s not the only thing to look for. You’ll want to incorporate lightweight, yet impactful hydrators including hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to name a few. Luckily, we have our gel-cream hybrid Water Jelly Dew Cream ($39) for you to add to your routine—that is if you haven’t already. This bouncy gel that’s reminiscent of a tall glass of water delivers heavyweight hydration with a lightweight texture thanks to a mix of ultra-hydrating ingredients including hyaluronic acid and other humectants. These work together to draw and lock in hydration for a gorgeous, dewy glow.

Add In Antioxidant Protection

You’ve probably heard whispers of the importance of antioxidants, but we’re here to give it to you straight. Antioxidants are staples in your skincare routine. When used topically, many fortify the skin barrier to defend against UV light rays, pollution and other environmental factors that produce damaging free radicals. Some gold standard antioxidants that are in many of our Goodhabit products are vitamin C and niacinamide. Vitamin C helps boost collagen production, fades dark spots, and neutralizes free radicals to prevent sun damage. While niacinamide is a staple for relaxing fine lines and wrinkles and providing anti-redness benefits by calming and soothing the skin. Always use SPF wearing these products to further protect your complexion.

Level Up Your SPF

Now that you’re spending a lot more time outside, you’ll want to be extra diligent about your sunscreen application. Including an SPF in your routine is not only essential for reducing your risk of getting skin cancer, but it’s also a must-have for defending against premature aging. Also, just a reminder that even if you’re not spending your days outside soaking up the spring sunshine, UVA and UVB filters can cause damage to your skin through cloudy skies and window glass.

Spring Clean Your Skincare Stash

Guilty of trying a product, not loving it and pushing it to the back of your drawer? Don’t worry, us too. Don’t let them collect any more dust. Remove any products that have expired, you notice a change in formulation, or simply aren’t using anymore. If the product hasn't been touched, try passing it off to a friend who may have better luck. But if it’s expired or changed, it’s time to toss. Using expired skin care can cause irritation and bacteria to grow on your skin—and you obviously don’t want that.
